Karl and Hanna Koecher presented themselves as staunch anti-communists, but were secretly agents of the Czechoslovakian intelligence service (StB). Karl worked as a contract translator for the CIA, and gather information that he passed to his StB handlers who then passed to their KGB comrades.

Koecher and the StB used this previously unknown meeting site in 1994 as the couple prepared to flee the US.

Among the damage caused by Koecher was information that led to the compromise and death of a major American spy, Alexander Ogorodnik (codename TRIGON). The Koechers were swapped in 1986 for the Soviet dissident Anatoly Scharansky and now reside in Prague.
