Joseph Cassidy Passport, 1920
The Double Agent Next Door - US Army sergeant Joe Cassidy took part in the longest known FBI counterintelligence operation of the Cold War. In 1959, the FBI and the Army “dangled” him in front of a Soviet intelligence officer who recruited him to spy. For over 20 years, this unassuming sergeant fed disinformation—vetted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff—about fictional nerve gas programs to Soviet military intelligence.
