Concealing-Coloration in the Animal Kingdom by Abbott H. Thayer and Gerald H. Thayer (c. 1909)
“Only an artist… can rightly appreciate the profound and perfect realism of these background-pictures worn by birds and other animals.” --Abbott H. & Gerald H. Thayer
Long before its military application, animal camouflage fascinated naturalists and those interested in the science of evolution.
Thayer’s scientific contemporaries were unconvinced by his ideas. Zoologist Hugh Cott, however, revived them in his 1940 book, Adaptive Coloration in Animals. Today, many ecologists admire Thayer’s insights.
