General Washington had an unconventional advantage in the War of Independence: the legendary deadeye shooting of his snipers. They were the Continental Army's first soldiers and special operators. Their marksmanship and irregular warfare tactics altered the outcomes of crucial battles that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War in favor of the Patriots.
Join award-winning military historian Patrick K. O’Donnell as he introduces us to the riflemen, the focus of his new book Revolutionary Snipers: Washington’s Frontier Commandos Whose Marksmanship Forged a New Way of War and Helped Win the Revolution. Snipers such as Daniel Morgan, Timothy Murphy, and Samuel Brady were rugged frontiersmen armed with long rifles, a path-breaking American technology that allowed them to attack from a significant distance. The snipers quickly struck terror among British troops besieged in Boston in the summer of 1775 by picking off targets. However, their success was checkered by mutiny, an epic journey through the Maine wilderness, and heart-wrenching failure at the gates of Quebec. Despite the setbacks, Washington and his officers perceived a new approach to waging war could emerge from the combined arms of pairing sniper groups with traditional units. O’Donnell will overview the vital role the riflemen played in many pivotal battles and how he brought their exploits to life through painstaking research.
