Spies & Spymasters Happy Hour: The Valentine Edition
Love & Lie Detection!
Ah Romance!! Remember Valentine’s Day pre-pandemic? Red roses, chocolate boxes, crowded restaurants, multiple dates…wait what? How do you know if your sweetheart is your one and only for real? Have you ever considered lie detection?
Join us for a serious, though tongue-in-cheek, approach to Valentine’s Day. National security lawyer, Spy Museum friend, and long-time comic book dealer/collector Mark S. Zaid will be leading this exploration of lie detection techniques from their roots, including discussion of polygraph provocateur and Wonder Woman creator William Marston, to the latest research into voice stress analyzers, micro-facial expressions, brain scans, and how the spy community has used such techniques over the years and currently.
His guests include:
Thomas P. Mauriello retired US Department of Defense, Chief of Polygraph; and Senior Lecturer, University of Maryland, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice
M. Ehsan Hoque, Associate Professor, University of Rochester, AI pioneer on improving human social and interrogation skills
Jennifer Vendemia, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, and former head of the Center for Advanced Technologies for the Detection of Deception, University of South Carolina
As our Valentine to you, Bartender Hilarey from Lost & Found will be shaking up two cocktails fit for lovers, liars, spies, or lie detectors. (Recipes below)
Berry Fine
1.5 oz Gin
.5 oz Chambord
1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
Shake and strain into a coupe or flute, top with Prosecco, garnish with a fresh raspberry.
Chocolate Covered Cherry
2 oz Bourbon
1 oz Cherry Liqueur (like Luxardo, Marischino, Don Ciccio Cerasum)
2 dashes Chocolate Bitters
Stir and strain into a chilled coupe class, Luxardo cherry garnish.
You’re welcome to ask questions after the talk – whether they relate to Wonder Woman or lying! This event is sponsored by Alumni of the University of Rochester.
