National Security Careers:
You do not need a security clearance to feel that the world is shifting—and fast. But figuring out where you fit into that story? That is the hard part. Especially when national security careers seem built for someone else: someone with military credentials, legacy connections, or a résumé that screams “insider.” This book is here to challenge that myth!

Whether you are a student, a career-switcher, or just someone who cannot stop following global headlines, this is your starting point. With clarity, context, and unvarnished guidance, this book opens the door to real careers in counterterrorism, cybersecurity, intelligence, and diplomacy—without the movie gloss. No vague advice. No gatekeeping. Just the truth about what these jobs really involve, who gets hired, and how to get ready. If you have ever wondered whether your curiosity, resilience, or sense of justice could actually count for something, this is where you find out. Not in theory but in practice.

“Dexter Ingram has lived the national security career most people can only imagine. His extraordinary journey – from Navy cockpits to counterterrorism strategy rooms around the globe – makes him uniquely qualified to guide the next generation of intelligence professionals. In National Security Careers, Dexter offers not just a roadmap, but a rare insider’s view of the people, principles, and purpose that shape this vital work. As a colleague, board member, and friend, I’ve seen firsthand his passion for mentoring and his deep respect for the mission. This book is a gift to anyone considering a career in national security.”
— Jonna Mendez, former CIA, Chief of Disguise and Board Member, International Spy Museum

“A long-awaited practical how-to guide from an authentic insider who knows, a must read for those interested in a career in national security that peels back the mythology of a hidden world, making it accessible to would-be future professionals.”
— Chris CostaExecutive Director, International Spy Museum, former Special Assistant to the President, and U.S. Army career intelligence officer

“Dexter Ingram launched IN Network with the goal of reaching and helping to guide underserved youth and young adults towards careers in national security. As America’s lead foreign affairs agency, the role of the State Department in shaping the U.S. role in the world is paramount. It is more vital than ever, given the multiplicity of actors on the global stage and the need to create a workforce to take on today’s challenges.”
— Ambassador Marcia Bernicat, former Director General, U.S. Department of State
