Cypher Cylinder

Late 1700s/Early 1800s, US

Age Is Just a Number.

You know you’re getting on in years when your best lighting is dim lighting. I may be the oldest true cipher device in the world— 200 years give-or-take—so don’t expect me to remember everything. I know I was found near President Thomas Jefferson’s home and I’m very similar to a “wheel cypher” designed in the 1800s. When you turn my creaky wooden wheels, you create a coded message from the scrambled letters on the edges. Don’t ask who used me, though. I’m a little rusty on the details.
