Membership Manager

Full-time/Overtime Exempt


SPY is looking for a top recruit to oversee the membership program at the current F Street location.  The new recruit will grow the membership base, create and implement a short and long-term marketing plan, work with colleagues on membership communication and training, and manage membership administration.  The recruit will also handle the transition to the new Museum location at L’Enfant Plaza.

Key Mission Details:

  •  Develop a full marketing program for membership.  This includes internal and external promotions, major recruitment campaigns, and membership upgrades.
  • Recommend changes to membership benefits, levels and pricing.
  • Maintain membership database.
  • Manage department administration.  Look at new ways to simplify new member processing, member renewals, and member benefit redemptions.
  • Create, administer and communicate frontline team incentive plan.  The goal of the incentive plan is to energize frontline staff and look at new ways to motivate and exceed expectations.
  • Handle all verbal and written communication for the membership program.  This will include membership communication such as a newsletter, member Web site, correspondence, etc.
  • Manage the department software systems, primarily the member database.  This includes the successful implementation of the CRM (Salesforce) and sales point-of-sale (Siriusware) systems, along with other supportive software programs and services.
  • Work with other departments on a regular basis, communicating needs and partner opportunities and utilizing colleague resources to support membership initiatives.
  • Manage and develop the department budget and reconcile department budget on a regular basis.  Candidate also develops and manages department forecast, in line with incentive plan.
  • Manager is knowledgeable on all industry-related developments through relationships with other Museums and trades association involvement.  This may include membership partnerships with other institutions.
  • Update the Vice President of Development with regular pacing, marketing, and general membership program information.
  • Support Development department initiatives such as grant proposals, fundraising events, new Museum naming opportunities, etc.
  • Participate in all Development department activities as needed (will include role in major fundraising event).
  • Work with Volunteer Manager to create and train a member volunteer program.
  • Other responsibilities as needed. 

One Year Mission Expectations – To be successful in this job, in one year the candidate will have:

·         Increased membership revenue by $95k in the first year.

·         Developed relationships and is on a familiar basis with all local members and high level members.

·         Created a short-term (1 year) and long-term (3 year) marketing plan for the Membership department.  This includes:

§  Assessing the current program (pricing, levels, etc.) and recommending/implementing changes in relation to a marketing plan.

§  Planning for the transition from the current location to the new Museum location.

§  Developing at least three (3) member recruitment campaigns.·        


·      Created a short-term (1 year) and long-term (3 year) marketing plan for the Membership department.

·      Developed a frontline training and incentive program for promoting the memberships.

·      Increased member renewal rate to 30%.

·      Added a minimum of five corporate members.


Mission Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Three to six years’ experience with in a membership position, preferably in a public institution, such as a museum, library, etc. 
  • Proven track record that demonstrates candidate has exceeded expectations in previous positions.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Excellent verbal communication style and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Has an interest in the SPY mission and vision and can see it as a passion.
  • Ability to work in a team environment; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated time management skills and including multi-tasking.  Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Worked both independently and with general supervision. 

Mission Schedule:

The standard work hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday thru Friday with one hour for lunch. However, we encourage staff to work established hours that work for their style – 7:30 – 4:30, 8:00 – 5:00, etc. This position may also need to work some evenings and weekends for networking events and Spy Museum events.
