Director of Development

The Director of Development leads the Development Division of the International Spy Museum’s Business Team.  This position is responsible for developing and executing strategies and tactics that result in the achievement of assigned goals and objectives as they relate to fundraising. 

This position reports to the Executive Vice President of Sales and Development of the Business Team.  and interfaces regularly with other department leaders and the museum’s Board of Directors.  The Director of Development interacts with key donors and external prospects and as, such serves as a professional ambassador for the museum.

Critical responsibilities include:

1.       Leading the Development Team

a.       Supervises all members of Development Division (currently Administrative Assistant, Development & Membership Manager and Development and Membership Director).

b.       Develops processes and procedures for division.


2.       Achieving Fundraising Goals and Objectives

a.       Collaborates with EVP, Sales and Development and President to determine ultimate fundraising goals.

b.       Proposes, manages and executes upon commiserate budget to achieve planned outcomes both in gross revenue and EBITDA objectives.

c.       Accurately forecasts results on consistent basis.


3.       Strategic Planning

a.       Further refines Development Division’s 2019 strategic plan and creates short- and long-term plans for 2020 and beyond, respectively.

                                                               i.      Plan(s) include:

1.       Strategies and tactics for achieving divisions fundraising goals that relate to:

a.       Prospecting

b.       Product Development

c.       Internal and external resource deployment as they relate to

                                                                                                                                       i.      Development staff

                                                                                                                                     ii.      The sales team

                                                                                                                                   iii.      Other departments (deliverables to support fundraising success).

d.       Key benchmarks and milestones calendar


4.       Prospect and Client Management

a.       Develops prospecting plan to achieve assigned goals for fundraising.

b.       Creates and maintains CRM based database of prospect universe including additional giving opportunities for and by current corporate and individual donors.  CRM is Salesforce.

c.       Creates relationships with at least 25 current and prospective key accounts.


5.       Reporting and Analysis

a.       Assembles and manages consistent fundraising pipeline and accurately forecasts results on regular basis.

b.       Determines and analyzes client and prospecting activity levels; makes adjustments where necessary.

c.       Uses CRM and other internal sources to furnish key data reports to executive leadership.


6.       Oversight of Development Division’s Fundraising Portfolio

a.       Corporate Sponsorships

b.       Annual William H. Webster Dinner

c.       Membership

d.       Grant opportunities

e.       New fundraising initiatives developed in concert with museum leadership


7.       Collaboration

a.       Closely collaborates with:

                                                               i.       EVP of S&D on regular basis through “1/1’s” and other meetings

                                                             ii.      Colleagues on the sales team

                                                           iii.      Other departments to define and produce all collateral and other material needed to effectively support Development Division’s success

                                                           iv.      Executive Director in strategizing and prospecting in pursuit of fundraising goals.

                                                           vi.      Advisory Board

                                                          vii.      Board’s Development Committee

b.       Conducts individual “1/1” meetings with Development team members.

c.       Attends and participates in weekly collaboration meetings between Development Team and Executive Director and bi monthly sales meetings with entire Business Team.

d.       Attends and participates in weekly department head meetings. 

8.       Recruiting


a.       Maintains recruiting pipeline of potential additions to Development team to ensure continuity of fundraising efforts.

Ideal candidates will have a commitment to and passion for the Spy Museum’s mission and seek to develop and establish relationships both internally and externally through a warm, friendly and professional manner both in behavior and appearance. 

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree and ten or more years of related professional experience. Outstanding candidates will have a proven track record of success in creating opportunities, preferably from high end donors and corporations.  A demonstrated ability to effectively build, lead, and motivate successful development efforts is required. Ideal candidates will have a commitment to and passion for the Spy Museum’s mission. Requires extensive networking and socializing including night and week-end meetings.
