Gunnar Sønsteby: Hero of the Norwegian Resistance
Thursday, 16 October; 6:30 pm

“We will not submit voluntarily, the struggle is already underway.”—Halvdan Koht, Norwegian foreign minister, April 9, 1940

When the Nazis invaded Norway, they were unprepared for the strength of Norwegian resistance. The refusal of the government to capitulate encouraged Norwegians to fight back. And no one was more aggressive than young Gunnar Sønsteby. Now in his 91st year, Sønsteby, the most highly decorated Norwegian, invites you to look back with him on his awe-inspiring days as a resistance fighter. His exploits gathering intelligence and undermining the Nazi regime earned Sønsteby entry into a special course of sabotage training in England. When he returned to Norway, “No. 24,” now a member of British Special Operations Executive, served as chief of all sabotage operations surrounding Oslo. Sønsteby and his team destroyed Nazi supplies, aircraft, and morale. He juggled more than 30 cover identities and yet managed to keep ahead of the Gestapo and survive to personally guard the royal family upon their triumphant return to Oslo. Norwegian Defense Attaché, Major General Tom Henry Knutsen will offer introductory comments for this memorable evening and Ivar Kraglund, Deputy Director of the Norwegian Resistance Museum, will provide an overview of the Norwegian Resistance movement.
